 Dynamic web sites

Mention the name of Amazon.com and most people will tell you they have visited it on more than one occasion, whilst searching for a book or CD either for themselves or as a gift for someone else.

'Ease of use' always scores highly with users of these sites; ones that allow you to type in a title, artist, or name, and present back to you all the possible matches, therefore enabling you to find your product of interest as quickly and easily as possible.

These are excellent examples of Dynamic web sites in action.

Rather than a collection of static pages which any site visitor will need to wade through to find what they're looking for, a dynamic web site literally builds each page according to criteria selected or entered by that visitor. In this way it makes the process of finding a product or service a more visitor-focused and rewarding experience.

How does a Dynamic web site work?

A Dynamic web site will employ programming languages such as asp, php, java, etc. to form a line of communication between the web site, a database which holds all the information, and the web site's visitor.

The visitor types in some search criteria and the site then searches through the database to find matches which are then presented back to the visitor.

All these actions (and there could be a surprising amount depending upon the complexity of the search) will be totally invisible to the visitor, all they are aware of is the effiient manner in which they can locate the information they ask for.

Dynamic web sites are often linked to e-commerce (as with Amazon.com for example), but they don't have to be. Any situation where a large amount of information needs to be presented in an easily accessible and searchable form is a perfect candidate for a Dynamic web site. These could include:

  • Multi-stage product search facilities
  • Password-controlled websites using multiple usernames/passwords
  • Quizzes and questionnaires
  • Booking systems
  • Systems for availability checking
  • Document storage and retrieval systems
  • Online forums
  • Customer support systems

The possibilities are practically endless.

Technical Requirements

The server on which the site resides will need to have the ability to communicate between the site and any database that might be present, and to do so will require certain programming languages to be present.

If you are interested in having a Dynamic web site and already have hosting, we can discuss the requirements with you. If you wish us to organise your hosting for you as part of your Fluvius Tailored package, then we will ensure the chosen server will have all the capabilities required to sustain your web site.

Can an existing web site become dynamic?

That's a difficult question to answer, since each site is different and one may allow easier integration that another.

Despite this, there would inevitably be a degree of re-coding and re-working that would always be necessary.

If you have an existing site that you think would benefit from a degree of Dynamic content, the easiest thing to do is contact us and we can then let you know the best way forward.

Costing

Because of its purpose-built nature, a Dynamic web site solution is priced on a per-site basis, and is therefore only feasible under our tailored package. Please contact us for a quotation.
