Content Management
Put in simple terms, Content Management - or to be more precise a Content Management System (CMS) - enables one or more people to add, amend or delete content on a Web site. Web Content Management (WCM) is also used to refer to these systems.
The content in question could be text on a web page, images, documents for download, or indeed anything that you would normally find on a web site. The arena of Web Content Management has also now expanded to include forums, discussion groups and message boards, even if these features don't exactly deal with managing content.
Ease of Use
The real power behind a Content Management System is its ease of use, especially when considering a bespoke solution (see below), since the only tool required for their use is a web browser, offering the ability to update at any time and from any location.
Types of Content Management System
Fluvius offer two Content Management Systems:
- Macromedia Contribute
- A bespoke programmed solution
Macromedia Contribute is a user friendly and very affordable software application to maintain your site content from your own computer, making it an activity open to everybody, everyday, and requiring no technical expertise.. It allows you to publish to the web in three simple steps: browse to the page that needs updating, edit it, click 'publish,' and it's done. The intuitive WYSIWYG environment offers point and click simplicity. Fluvius will create the site initially and then hand it over for you to maintain via Contribute, but we're always there incase you need some help.
A bespoke programmed solution is the more expensive option but is far more powerful if the site needs to be administered by a number of different people, or from several locations.
All updating is carried out through a normal web browser, and so anyone familiar with its use (which is the entire web-using population) will immediately feel at home.
Adding a CMS to an existing web site
A Macromedia Contribute CMS can be added to an existing site relatively easily, especially if Fluvius originally designed the site (because we always produce sites to the latest standards which Contribute understands). Even if we didn't design the site then it should be quite feasible with a few possible adjustments.
Adding a bespoke CMS solution to an existing site would be far more time-consuming - but not technically impossible depending upon the site in question and exactly the level of self-updating you wish to do. It would be best to contact us first and we can give you a good idea of its feasibility.
Costing
The cost of a Macromedia Contribute based Content Management system would be the cost of the initial web site using any of our First Step, Business, Business Plus or Tailored packages, plus the price of the software and initial training on its use (we can't give an exact figure for this since the software purchase price can vary) . Don't worry, it's very easy to learn the software and full documentation is included, and we're always here if you need extra help.
Because of its purpose-built nature, our bespoke Content Management solution is priced on a per-site basis, and is therefore only feasible under our tailored package. Please contact us for a quotation.
As far as the cost of adding either of these options to an existing web site is concerned, we would really need to visit the site to give you any idea of cost. Please contact us for further information.
