Answers

Web pages and Web sites

A. How much does a Web site cost?

That's rather like asking "How long is a piece of string?", since every single Web site has to fulfil a slightly different brief.

That was the main reason for creating our different Web design packages; to give the client an up-front price so that they could budget more effectively.

As far as a totally unique custom designed Web site is concerned (please see our Tailored package) an average price for 20 pages would be about £800. This would include domain registration, hosting, and search engine submission.

A. Who owns the copyright for my Web site once it's complete?

You do.

Unlike some other more unscrupulous design agencies, Fluvius don't claim to own the copyright on any Web sites we create once the project is paid for in full.

We'll even give you the completed site on CD, including all working files and artwork.

Domain names

A. What is a domain name and do I need one?

A domain name is the unique name that identifies a Web site on the World Wide Web (www.fluvius.co.uk for example).

It is technically possible to own a Web site without registering a suitable domain name, but the address would be far less memorable (e.g. www.someotherWeb site.com/yoursite) and would present a far less professional image to the outside world. Search engine ranking would undoubtedly suffer too.

A. How do I register a domain name and what does it cost?

Because the registering of a domain name is a technical issue, only those with access to 'name servers' can register a domain name.

Fluvius can register a domain name on your behalf for the following prices:
.co.uk / .org.uk / .ltd.uk - £7.99 for 2 years
.com / .net / .org - £11.99 for 1 year
.info / .biz / .name - £22.99 for 2 years
.tv - £38.99 for 1 year

Please note that any Web site built and hosted by Fluvius includes the price of domain registration (and any subsequent re-registration fees) within it.

Search engines

A. Why does my Web site only appear in some search engines?

The term search engine is commonly applied to all Web sites that facilitate Internet users in finding Web sites of interest to them, of which there are many.

In fact the term search engine should really only apply to those Web sites that use programs (commonly known as spiders or crawlers) to automatically search for and index every Web page (and in many cases every word on every Web page) on the World Wide Web. Google is an example of a very good search engine.

Directories on the other hand are completely different from search engines. Instead of listing Web pages they only list Web sites, and instead of being created by the spidering program, they are created manually by human beings employing pretty stringent quality control regimes. Yahoo! is easily the world's most visited directory.

So the reason that a Web site can appear on some search engines/directories and not others is simply down to whether that site has been 'spidered' or listed.

Fluvius offer full Search Engine Optimisation services.
